What separates AI headshot tools, why your uploads decide the result, and where a real photographer still wins.
Upload quality decides output quality almost entirely. Choose on how many photos a tool accepts, whether output is usable at full resolution, and what it does with images of your face.
What differs between tools
- How many source photos they accept — more angles give the model more to work with.
- Identity preservation, which is the whole difficulty: changing everything except the face.
- Output resolution, and whether it holds at full size rather than thumbnail.
- Retention and training use of photographs of you.
What to upload
This matters more than the tool choice:
- Several photos, varied in angle and expression but consistent in appearance.
- Recent — a headshot that looks like you five years ago is not useful.
- Sharp, evenly lit, face unobstructed. No sunglasses, hands or heavy shadow.
- Not already retouched. Retouched skin fed back in produces the plastic look people complain about.
Realistic expectations
Good: clean background, plausible studio lighting, professional wardrobe, usable at profile-picture size. Variable: exact likeness — generating a batch and selecting is the normal workflow. Weak: hands, jewellery, glasses frames, lanyards. Check ears, teeth and the hairline at full resolution; that is where the tells are.
Not for identity documents. A generated portrait is fine for a professional profile and inappropriate anywhere authenticity is being certified — passports, licences, verification.
